Sanding the Floors

Finally... the moment we've been waiting for. To be able to sand the hardwood floors.  Pulling up the carpet wasn't so bad, nor was the padding.. What was a terrible nightmare was taking out the million and one staples from the floors. I think the original carpet installers wanted to make sure their carpet would never be able to be pulled up because each room had staples around the walls, which was expected, but there were 2-5 rows of staples in each room.. It has taken us weeks to remove every single staple.

Upon removing the padding it was discovered that the padding had melted to the hardwoods, and was worst near the fireplaces.

This is the guck that was under the padding.  Ewwwwwwwwww

Living room, after scraping guck and two passes with the drum sander 36 grit...

Living room... same as above different angle.

Downstairs west-side bedroom (luckily didn't have guck..) This is after one pass with the drum sander 36 grit.
Stephen removing wood from one of the rooms... =)

11:00 PM... 2 hours scraping, sanding with 36 grit, then scraping some-more... Finally the original color of the hardwoods are revealed.. =)

The final product... The floors came out gorgeous.

Kitchen & Ideas.....

 Kitchen before being sanded and painted. I sanded the two drawers on the floor and painted just to test out the gloss on the paint.

  Meeeeeeeee. Sanding the kitchen cabinets.  Oh, what fun... =)
My feet after sanding.. Yes I wore flip flops! Lol...

This is what the kitchen looked like in it's original condition..

After being sanded and painted... This is only the first coat of paint. I used Valspar Paint & Primer in one. It will need one more coat, and should look absolutely gorgeous. But with one coat you can already see the difference.

These are just a few ideas that I have up my sleeve. I sanded the metal kitchen cabinets yesterday and just have to give them a thorough cleaning and they will be ready for some high gloss white paint.

One side of my kitchen doesn't have any cabinets and I am going to put in shelving with old wood found on the property. With new white cornices... As you can see the theme throughout the mismatched eclectic kitchen will be white and wood...  I found the perfect stove for the kitchen..
~~~Look ~~~
Whats funny is that the previous farm house we owned had the exact same (working) stove and I gave it away... Life is funny. But now I just have to have one. I will be painting the front and back splash in an antique red. Yes I said paint. Rustoleum & Krylon both have high heat paints made specifically for stoves, fireplace bricks, and BBQ's..
Okay so after much thought.. I thought about vehicle paint and how it holds up to engine heat which is way over 500 degrees or whatever the max temp of an oven is. I had to share this.
I called around different automotive body shops to see if they would paint my stove and if so what would they charge? LOL... This is how 5 of the 6 phone calls went...
Me~~~> Hi, Do you paint vehicles?
Body Shop~~~~> Yes we do.
Me~~~> Great, how much would you charge to paint a 40 inch stove in a bright red?
Body Shop~~~~> A 40 foot boat?
ME~~~> No, not a boat, a stove.
Body Shop~~~~> Mam?
Me~~~> You know a stove, the one found in a kitchen....
Body Shop~~~~> Long Pause......... Then a loud chuckle, Ummmm I think we could do a stove for $100.00, then a long chuckle... again...
I think they must think I am one crazy woman... LOL....
Just had to share this with you guys and mostly gals... =)
When this house is all done I am going to have to call it the Painted House... LOL
This is the kitchen so far.
Here is the after. We still have to clean up and put the chair railing above the bead board.
But we made these counters ourselves. After much research on butcher blocks we decided to do it ourselves. And the end result is exactly the look I was wanting. I'll add the costs and how-to FIY these counters for under $200....
